Lolo von Hornstein was the daughter of the composer Robert von Hornstein and his wife Charlotte. The painter Franz von Lenbach had known her as a child when from visits to the house of her parents. He had also corrected her work when she studied painting under Nikolaus Gysis.

She worked in Munich as a portrait painter and she married Lenbach after his marriage to Magdelena Gräfin Moltke had failed. They shared a passion for art and it was a happy marriage. In 1899 their daughter Gabriele (d.1978) was born. After Lenbach's death in 1904 she took care of his artistic estate. In the 1920s she sold the Lenbach Villa to the city of Munich to house a municipal art gallery.
