Lolo von Hornstein was the daughter of the composer Robert von Hornstein and his wife Charlotte. The painter Franz von Lenbach had known her as a child when from visits to the house of her parents. He had also corrected her work when she studied painting under Nikolaus Gysis. She worked in Munich as a portrait painter and she married Lenbach after his marriage to Magdelena Gräfin Moltke had failed. They shared a passion for art and it was a happy marriage. In 1899 their daughter Gabriele (d.1978) was born. After Lenbach's death in 1904 she took care of his artistic estate.
