Third son of Albrecht Adam and brother of Benno Adam. He mostly painted battles and the life of soldiers. Together with his brother Julius he created a series of prints on the Austrian campaign in Italy in 1849. He had travelled with Karl von Schwarzenberg and witnessed several battles. He lived in Italy until he returned to Munich in 1853. After he married in 1858 he went to Italy once more to witness and paint the war. He also painted the Franco-German war of 1870/1871.
