Benno Adam was the oldest son of the painter Albrecht Adam. His brothers Franz, Eugen and Julius Adam were also painters. Benno was educated at his father's studio. In 1834 he married Josepha Quaglio, a daughter of the painter Domenico Quaglio. He was best known for his paintings of animals. In 1835 his first paintings where shown at the Kunstverein in Munich. His "Viehmarkt im baierischen Gebirge" (1839) is in the Neue Pinakothek in Munich. In 1847 Ernst Reventlow-Farve asked him to come to Holstein. His son Emil Adam also became a painter and after he took over his father's work, Benno retited to Kelheim. There he died in 1892.
