Ernst von Sachsen-Meiningen was the son of Georg II, Duke of Sachsen-Meiningen and his second wife Feodora of Hohenlohe-Langenburg. He joined the army and by the time he retired he had obtained the rank of colonel. On 20 September 1892 in Munich, he entered into a morganatic marriage to Katarina Jensen, the daugher of the painter Marie Jensen and the poet Wilhelm Jensen. His father gave her the title of Baroness of Saalfeld. They had six children. Ernst retained his succession rights and when his older half-brother Bernard III died in 1928 he became the head of the ducal house. But the monarchy had been abolished in 1918 and he never reigned.
