Dominik Ertl was taught by Heißler, Dont and Bruckner. He travelled through Germany as a concert violinist. He became band leader for the Hoch- und Deutschmeister Regiment and his best known composition is the "Hoch- und Deutschmeister-Marsch".

After he worked for the Austrian Army he held an engagement as operatta conductor in Dresden and in 1889 he became musical director in Danzer's Orpheum in Vienna. In 1893 he was engaged as conductor of concerts in Riga. Most of his life he lived and worked in Vienna.
