Nicolaas Pieneman was trained by his father, the painter Jan Willem Pieneman (1779-1853). He studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam as well. In 1830 he won the Gold Medal of the Royal Dutch Institute for his "De Moord op Archimedes te Syracuse". He specialised in painting recent historical events and portraits. He was friendly with King William III and he painted the king and several other members of the royal family.
