As a child, Marie Seebach was already on the stage. She was educated as a concert singer at the conservatory in Cologne, but she always restricted herself to acting. She was successful in Hamburg and Munich and was engaged at the Burgtheater in Vienna. In 1859 she married the singer Albert Niemann in Hanover. He followed her to Berlin in 1866, but a divorce followed in 1869. In 1886 she became a member of the Royal Theatre in Berlin. During her career she played important parts like Gretchen (Goethe), Mary Stuart and Desdemona (both Shakespeare).
