Alexandrine von Hutten-Czapska was the daughter of Adam, Graf von Hutten-Czapski (1819-1884) and Marianne, Gräfin von Rzewuska-Grocholska (1827-1897). Her father was enobled in 1874. In 1873 she married to Alexander von Kolemin, the Russian envoy in Hessen. She started an affair with the widowed Louis IV, the Grand Duke of Hessen-Darmstadt. After she divorced her husband she entered in a morganatic marriage with Louis on 30 April 1884. Queen Victoria, the mother of Louis' first wife Alice disapproved strongly when she heared of the marriage and it was annulled later in 1884.

She received an allowance and the title Gräfin von Romrod. In 1886 the novel "Le Roi de Thessalie" told the world about the marriage in a slightly disguised form. The unknown author used the pseudonym Ary Ecilaw. In 1893 she married Basil von Bacheracht (1851-1916), the Russian Ambassador in Bern. She died in 1941 in Vevey in Switzerland.
