Jean Lambert Tallien was the son of Lambert Tallien (d.1793), the steward of the Marquis de Bercy. He worked as a clerk for a notary. At the start of the French Revolution, he became secretary to the politician Jean-Baptiste Brostaret (1755-1829). In 1791 he founded the newspaper L'Ami des citoyens. He was elected to the National Convention and he voted for the death of Louis XVI without appeal. He was sent on several missions during which he had many insurgents executed. Back in Paris he joined the Indulgents, the opponents of Robespierre. His mistress Thérésa Cabarrus was imprisoned at the Prison de La Force. He joined the Committee of Public Safety, but soon afterwards he left it. He played an important part in the downfall and execution of Robespierre. On 27 July 1794 he had Thérésa and Joséphine de Beauharnais released from prison. He married Thérésa, who was pregnant with their daughter, on 26 December 1794. His wife started divorce proceedings against him in February 1797. Tallien accompanied Napoleon to Egypt and was captured by the British on his voyage back to France. He was taken to London, where Charles James Fox received him. After his release in 1802 the divorce was finalized. With the help of Fouché and Talleyrand he was appointed consul at Alicante. He resigned after he lost eyesight in one of his eyes from yellow fever. After his return to Paris and the fall of the empire he lived in modest circumstances. He died of leprosy in 1820 in Paris.
