Grandson of Johann Wolfgang Goethe. His father is Goethe's son August. In 1830 his father August left for Rome and he died in that city later that year. Wolfgang studied law in Bonn, Berlin, Jena and Heidelberg. He was promoted in Heidelberg in 1845. Although in bad health, he worked as a civil servant in Rome and then for for a long time in Dresden, before he became a chamberlain in Weimar. He never married. Maximilian Goethe wrote "Der Mensch Und Die Elementarische Nation" and the poem "Erlinde".
