Orane Demazis was born Henriette Burgart in Oran, Algeria. Her family came from Alsace, France. In 1919 she entered the conservatory in Paris. After she graduated in 1922 she joined the Théâtre de l'Atelier. Between 1922 and 1926 she appeared in plays by De Musset and Merimée.

In 1923 she met Marcel Pagnol. She became his lover and played in many of hi movies. She is best known for her part as Fanny in his series "Marius", "Fanny" and "César" (1929-1936). After the affair ended she was less successful but she appeared in movies until the 1970s.
