Edward Ledger succeeded his father Frederick Ledger (d.1874) as the owner and the long time editor of "The Era", a weekly newspaper about the theatre and music. It appeared from 1837 to 1939. He was its editor from 1868 or 1872 to 1905, when he retired after a serious illness. In 1921 he sold the paper to William Hamar Bass. Ledger was a collector of furniture and suits of armour.
