john Lucas was the son of the author William Lucas (d.1819). He was an apprentice to the engraver Samuel William Reynolds before he became a portrait painter. At the Clipstone Street academy he worked with William Etty. His portrait of Mary Russel Mitford was ehibited at the Royal Academy in 1829. Another portrait of her was sold to the National Portrait Gallery after his death. Among his sitters were Qeen Adelaide, Prince Albert, Wellington, Palmerston, Gladstone and many others. He married Miss Milborough Morgan (1812-1880) and they had three sons and two daughters. His son William (1836-1880) was a water-colour painter.
