Marianne Schönauer studied at the Max-Reinhardt-Seminar in Vienna and was also educated as a singer. She worked for the Wiener Volkstheater, the Raimundtheater in Vienna and the Landestheater in Salzburg. From 1951 to 1987 she was part of the ensemble of the Theater in der Jozefstadt in Vienna.

From 1946 onwards she appeared in movies and later also in television productions. During the 1950s and 1960s she was also known as a singer of German 'schlager' songs. In 1997 she suddenly died in Vienna.
