George Greville Wellesley was the third and youngest son of Gerald Valerian Wellesley, a brother of the Duke of Wellington. In 1828 he entered the navy and in 1838 he became a lieutenant. He served in the East Indies and in the Pacific. In 1853 he married Elizabeth Doughty Lukin (d.1906). They had a daughter, Olivia Georgina Wellesley (1857-1956). In 1862 he became the commander of the Indian Navyuntil it was abolished. In 1869 Admiral superintendent at Portsmouth. During the 1870 he was Commander-in-chief in North America and in the West Indies. In 1879 he was appointed Commissioner of the Admiralty and in 1888 Commissioner of the Patriotic Fund.
