After his education (probably in Freiburg im Breisgau) Wentzinger travelled to Strasbourg, Rome and Paris (1737). From 1745 onwards he worked from Freiburg. He was among the most versatile rococo artists of his time. In 1748 he decorated Schloss Ebnet near Freiburg. From 1757 to 1760 he directed the decoration of the Stiftskirche St. Gallen. From 1761 onwards he lived and worked at a house at the Freiburger Münsterplatz that was known as "Zum Schönen Eck".

He became a honorary citizen of Freiburg and a rich man. Katharina Egg, the mayor's daughter, refused to marry him. She asked him to remain unmarried and bequeath his fortune to the poor like herself. He died in 1797 in Freiburg.
