Eduard von Riedel was the son of the builder Karl Riedel. He studied architecture in Bayreuth and Munich. After he passed an examination in 1834 he was able to travel to Italy in 1839/1840. In 1842 he married Antonie Mohr from Mannheim.

He constructred the Residence and the garden for king Otto of Greece and was his court architect until 1850. Then he returned to Munich where he finished the Propyläen with Leo von Klenze. From 1852 to 1857 he was a professor at the Polytechnikum. In 1872 he was appointed court building director. From 1869 to 1874 he worked on a concept for the Neuschwanstein Castle. He also created many fountains for the Schleissheim Palace.
