Alexander von Kotzebue was the son of the author August von Kotzebue and his third wife Wilhelmina Friederike von Krusenstern (1778-1852). Alexander witnessed the murder of his father by Carl Ludwig Sand when he was four years old. He was educated in the Cadet Corps in St Petersburg. He left it in 1834 and in 1838 he decided to start an artistic career. For six years he studied at the Academy in St Petersburg, where Alexander Sauerweid was among his teachers.

In 1846 he continued his studies in Paris and he also visited Belgium, the Netherlands and Italy. He settled in Munich where he became a member of the Academy of Art. He created several large paintings of battles for the tsar of Russia.
