Joseph Klotz was the son of the theatre painter Matthias Klotz (1748-1821). He visited Paris and Berlin to study master paintings in those cities. He was best known as a scenery painter and succeeded his father in 1821 as court theatre painter for landscapes. His best known scenery work depicted the great fire of Moscow in 1812. It was shown at the Theater am Isartor in July, 1814. Because he mainly painted theatre sceneries little of his work has survived. |
