Joseph Höchl started working as a bricklayer. He married Therese Trisberger (1775-1806), the stepdaughter of his employer and after her death Josepha Widmann (1786-1877), the daughter of Matthias Widmann, who was at that time his employer. He started his own company that constructed many building in the Maxvorstadt. By 1831 it was the largest building company in Munich. He also owned a brick factory. After he died in 1838 in Munich his son Anton Höchl continued his company, but he was mostly active as a painter.
