Anton Heinrich von Hess was the son of the glasspainter Heinrich Maria von Hess (1798-1863) and the grandson of the draftsman and engraver Carl Ernst Christoph Hess (1755-1828). He was educated by Caspar von Zumbusch (1830-1915). Between 1866 and 1868 he travelled to Italy to study several times. In 1875 he was appointed professor at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Munich. In 1909 he became a professor at the Technischen Hochschule in Munich. His pupils included Peter Bruckmann (1850-1925), Gustav Rutz (1857-1949) and Heinrich Düll (1867-1956). He is best known for monumental balcony figures of the 'Civic Virtues' at Munich City Hall. He died in 1909 and was buried at the Alte Südfriedhof in Munich.
