Son of the portrait painter Joseph Heigel (1780-1837). His father lived in Paris when he was born but the family returned to Munich in 1819. He was educated at the Art Academy in Munich and in several studio's in Paris. In 1839 and in 1846 he travelled to Italy to study.

He mainly worked as a portrait painter and as a painter of genre pieces. He also painted many miniatures and watercolours. For five years he was the drawing masters of the Bavarian princesses. He received several awards and was appointed Court Painter in 1868. Died in1888 in Munich.
