Friedrich Dürck was the son of a merchant who lost his fortune and worked as an inspector at the royal hunting lodge Hubertusburg. Friedrich took his first art lessons at the Academy of Fine Arts in Leipzig. In 1822 his uncle Joseph Stieler invited him to come to Munich and study with him. Until 1829 he assisted Stieler with his portraits. He made himself a name with his own portraits and in 1836 he was able to travel to Italy, where he stayed in Rome and in Florence until 1837. He returned to Munich, where his portraits of public figures and royalty were popular. In 1840 he married Laura Stieler, the daughter of his uncle. They had three children. In 1858 he painted King Ludwig I and in 1861 he created the only two portraits for the kings Gallery of Beauties that were not painted by Stieler. The women he portrayed were Agnes von Greiner and Carlotta von Breidbach-Bürresheim. Related persons is nephew/niece of Stieler, Joseph |
