Nikita Magaloff came from a noble Georgian family from St. Petersburg. In 1918 his family emigrated to Finland and then to Paris. There he studied with Isidor Philipp and he befriended Maurice Ravel and Sergei Prokofiev.

Magaloff recorded all Chopin's piano music, using Chopin's original manuscripts. He was also a fine interpreter of Mendelssohn-Bartholdy. In his later years his style was more challenging and he was fascinated by the concept of fear and death.

After Dinu Lipatty died in 1949 he inherited his master class until 1960. Among his students were Martha Argerich, Maria Tipo, Ingrid Haebler and Lionel Rogg.
