Amédée Bonnet went to school in Belley before he took up his studies in Lyons. He studied medicin and in 1833 he became a surgeon at the Hôtel-Dieu de Lyon. In 1838 he became a professor for Surgery. In 1843 he published "Traité des maladies des articulations", also published in Germany in 1851. This work can be seen as the foundation for modern knee surgery. In 1853 it was followed by "Traité de thérapeutique des maladies articulaires".

After he died in 1858, aged only 49, a bronze statue was erected for him in the Hôtel-Dieu de Lyon.
