Louis Hilaire Carrand is regarded as a precursor of impressionism. He studied under Nicolas Fonville before he started travelling. He visited Italy and stayed at Florence. In Lyon he formed a group of painters with François Vernay et Auguste Ravier that was close to the École de Barbizon of landscape painters.

Carrand frequently exhibited at the Salon of that city from 1846 and at the Salon of Paris from 1859. He often painted the countryside of Lyon. His paintings are in the collection of the Musée d'Orsay in Paris and the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon.
