Marietta di Monaco was born Maria Kirndörfer. She was raised by foster parents and at a cloister school. After that she led a wandering life. In 1913 she attracted attention at the Simplicissimus cabaret in Munich.

She became well known for her literary lectures and she performed not only in Munich, but also in Berlin and in Paris. In 1916 she was a founding member of the Cabaret Voltaire in Zùrich. She befriended Joachim Ringelnatz, Frank Wedekind and Klabund and became a poets´ muse. In 1916 she was a model for the painter Christian Schad. In 1920 Klabund published the novel "Marietta" that was about her.

In 1936 she emigrated to France, but in 1939 she returned to Germany. In 1962 she received the art price of Schwabing. She died in 1981 in Munich.
