Maria Wimmer was the daughter of an architect. She took acting lessons in Leipzig and in 1932 she was contracted by the Stadttheater in Stettin. There she debuted in Hauptmanns "Florian Geyer". From 1934 to 1937 she worked for the Städtischen Bühnen in Frankfurt am Main and in 1937 she moved to the Schauspielhaus in Hamburg. In 1947 she joined the Residenztheater in München. In 1949 she switched to the Kammerspiele where she was engaged until 1957 and appeared in Strindberg´s "Der Vater" under the direction of Fritz Kortner. Apart from the theatre she appeared in several movies and television productions. During the 1980s and 1990s she worked frequently for the Münchner Kammerspiele again. In 1950 she married the lawyer Otto Seemüller. They had no children. She lived at Mezzegra at Lake Como and her former home there is marked by a plaque.
