Harry Steier studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Frankfurt because his father wanted him to. When he was finally allowed his switch to music he studied singing at the Raff-Konservatorium. After he finished his studies he worked as a teacher, but soon he stood on the stage. He was engaged at Kiel (1910-1911), Bern (1913-1914), Freiburg, Augsburg and from 1916 onwards at the Deutschen Oper in Berlin-Charlottenburg. In 1923 he went to the USA and sang at the Metrolopolitan Opera in New York. He freqently sang at the Festspiele in Bayreuth. During his last years he recorded many traditional German songs. |
