Inge von Wangenheim was born Inge Franke in Berlin. Her mother was an assembly worker. She took acting lessons and played smaller parts at several theatres in Berlin. Among her directors was Erwin Piscator. In 1931 she joined Truppe 31 that was led by Gustav von Wangenheim and during the same year she joined the German communist party KPD. Also in 1931 she married Von Wangenheim. After the nazis came to power she went to the Soviet Union where she lived in Moscow during the first years. There she worked as an actress and a journalist. In 1941 she was moved to Kasan and later to Taschkent. In 1943 she returned to Moscow, where she worked for the Nationalkomitee Freies Deutschland. In 1945 she returned to Germany and in 1946 she became a member of the SED. She published the magazine "Volksbühne" and again worked as an actress and as a director. After the 1940s she was mostly active as an author. After her separation from Von Wangenheim she moved to Rudolstadt in 1961. She had met Dorchen Latterman, who became her companion.
