Sheila Gish was born sheila Gash and studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. Her first important part in a musical was that of Bella in "Robert and Elizabeth". In 1995 she won an Oliver Award for her part in Stephen Sondheim's "Company". she also appeared in several movies, among them "Mansfield Park" (1999) and many television productions.

She married the actor Robert Curram in 1964 and they had two daughters who both became actresses, Kay Curram and Lou Gish. In 1985 she divorced Curram. In 2003 she lost her right eye to cancer. She had lived with Dennis Lawson for twenty years when she married him in 2004, but in 2005 she died of cancer.
