Lilli Bohnke was a daughter of the banker Franz von Mendelssohn (1865-1935) and his wife Marie Westphal (1867-1957). She studied the violin under Carl Flesch and Georg Kulenkampff. On 2 September 1919 she married Emil Bohnke, a composer, conductor and violist. They had three children.

In 1928 they both died during a car crash near Pasewalk in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern where they were looking for a holiday destination for their children. They were buried at the Landeseigener Friedhof Dahlem in Berlin.
