Rita Streich was the born in Russia as the daughter of a prisoner of war. Her mother was Russian. After her father's released her parents went to Germany where she grew up. She had singing lessons in Augsburg and Berlin and her teachers were Willi Domgraf-Fassbaender, Erna Berger and Maria Ivogün.

In 1943 she debured at the Stadttheater in Aussig as Zerbinetta in "Ariadne auf Naxos". After the war she was engaged at the German State Opera in Berlin. In 1952 she was contracted by the State Opera in Vienna. She also appeared in Bayreuth, Rome, Salzburg, Milan, London and Chicago.

In 1974 she became a teacher at the Folkwang-Hochschule in Essen and at the Musikakademie in Vienna. She died of a brain tumour in Perchtoldsdorf near Vienna in 1987.
