Herbert Fleischmann took acting lessons a the Max Reinhardt seminar in Vienna. He obtained an engagement at the Kammerspiele in Bremen, followed by jobs in Baden-Baden, Hamburg, Berlin, Frankfurt am Main, Stuttgart, Zürich and Munich. In 1949 he married the actress Ruh Leuwerik, but this marriage effectively lasted only a few weeks and they divorced in 1952. His second wife was the actress Xenia Portner and his third wife was another another actress, Miriam Spoerri.

In 1961 he played in his first movie, "Barbara" and in 1962 he appeared in a television production for the first time. He became well known for his part as Dr. Schiller in the television series "Raumpatrouille". He also appeared in crime serials like "Derrik" and "Der Kommissar". In 1972 he received the Ernst-Lubitsch-Preis. Towards the end of the 1970s his career was harmed by his alcohol problems. His fourth wife was the photographer Inge Winkler from Berlin. He lived with her in Cavigliano in Switzerland and this marriage lasted until his death of heart failure in 1984 in Cavigliano.
