Walter Millard Fleming obtained a degree in medicin in Albany, New York in 1862. He served as a surgeon in the National Guard during the Civil War. After the war he practised in Rochester, New York.

In 1868 he moved to New York and there he became a prominant physician and surgeon. In 1869 he joined the Masonic Fraternity and together with William J. Conlin he founded of a Masonic Order called the Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine in 1872. The organisation is known for its hospitals for children. Fleming practised until 1909 in New York City and died in 1913, aged 76.
