Adrienne Gessner was educated at the Akademie für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Vienna. she debuted in 1916 in Munich. Engagements in Stuttgart and Vienna followed. From 1931 onwards she also appeared in movies.

Her husband Lothar Ernst was Jewish and during the Second World War they emigrated to the USA. In New York she stood on Broadway.

After her return to Austria she was engaged at the Burgtheater. In 1953 she appeared next to Romy Schneider in the movie "Die Deutschmeister". She was awarded the Max-Reinhardt-Ring for her work.
