Joseph Josephi was the son of a towel handler. After his technical studies he decided to become an actor against the wishes of his father. In 1873 he debuted at the Rudolfheimer Stage in Vienna. After an engagement at the Landestheater in Graz and work in Breslau and Chemnitz he was contracted by the Ringtheater in Vienna in 1878.

In 1880 he switched to the Carl-Theater and in 1882 to the Theater an der Wien. There he was successful in operettas although he was overshadowed by the extremely popular Girardi. In 1900 he moved to Berlin where he worked at the Friedrich-Wilhelmstädtisches Theater (1900) and at the Metropol-Theater (1901). In 1919 he was still on the stage at the Edentheater in Berlin. He died in that city in 1920 but he was buried in Vienna.
