Ehmi Bessel grew up in Mannheim. She took acting lessons with Fritz Alberti (1877-1954) and held her first engagement at Louise Dumont's Schauspielhaus in Düsseldorf. From 1929 to 1932 she worked for the Kammerspiele in Munich and in 1932 she moved to the Schauspielhaus in Hamburg.

She was the lover of Ernst Udet and in 1934 their daughter Dinah was born. Shortly before her birth she married the actor Werner Hinz and therefore Hinz was Dinah's lawful father. In 1935 she became a Staatsschauspielerin (Actress of State) in nazi Germany. In 1939 she and Hinz had a son, the actor Michael Hinz (1939-2008). Another son and also an actor, Knud, was born in 1943.

After the war she worked from 1947 to 1950 for the Deutschen theater in Berlin. She also appeared at Bertold Brecht's "Berliner Ensemble". After 1960 she lived in Hamburg. During the 1970s she could be seen in several television movies. In 1984 she appeared with Hinz in Hamburg in "Einmal Moskau und zurück". She died in 1988 in Hamburg and was buried in Berlin beside her husband, who had died in 1985.
