Felix Martin Oberlaender was the son of Martin Gotthard Oberländer, who had been Minister of the Interior in Saxony from 1848 to 1849. He was educated at the Kreuzschule in Dresden and studied medicin in Leipzig. He continured his studies in Greifswald, where he was promoted in 1874. From 1875 to 1878 he worked at the city hospital in Dresden-Friedrichstadt. After that he opened a private clinic as an urologist and in later years he became a professor in Dresden. In 1906 he was in charge of the foundation of the Deutschen Gesellschaft für Urologie. Apart from his main profession he was an active botanist and an art collector as well.

After his death in Dresden in 1915 he was buried at the Johannisfriedhof in Dresden-Tolkewitz. The sculpture on his grave was created by Richard König.
