Friedrich Johann von Seebach was an officer in the cavalry and held the position of Oberstallmeister to his friend Grand Duke Karl August of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach. He married Henriette Sophie Wilhelmine von Stein zu Nord- und Ostheim (1771-1817).

In 1811 the Altenburg in Weimar was built for him and when he was promoted to major-general in 1817 it was enlarged. After his death in 1847 it was sold by his widowed daughter Helene von Rott and Franz Liszt lived there afterwards.
