Son of the mineralogist and engraver Theodor Thon (1792-1838). He studied painting in Leipzig and worked for Friedrich Preller at the Drawing School in Weimar. With Preller he travelled to Norway and the Netherlands. He also studied in Antwerp. During the 1850s he was a pioneer of photography in Weimar. In 1861 he became a teacher at the Großherzoglich-Sächsischen Kunstschule in Weimar. He was best known for his genre and landscape painting. Thon contributed to the humerous newspaper Die Laterne.
