Sonja Ziemann was the daughter of the tax consultant Otto Ziemann and his wife Alice, born Hoffmann. When she was ten years old she attended dancing lessons at Tatjana Gsovsky's school in Berlin. In 1941 she first appreared as a ballerina. She also took acting lessons and appeared in "Die Jungfrau von Babelsberg" (1941) and "Ein Windstoß" (1942). In 1944 she was put on the Gottbegnadeten-Liste of the Reich Ministry for Public Enlightenment and Propaganda.

After the war she conrtinued her film career and in 1950 she became well known for her roles in "Schwarzwaldmädel" (1950) and "Grün ist die Heide" (1951). She appeared in 10 films with Rudolf Prack. She married the stocking manufacturer Rudolf Hambach from Wiesbaden in 1953. The marriage lasted until 1956 and they had a son, Pierre, who died from cancer in 1970. From 1961 to 1968 she was married to the Polish writer Marek Hlasko. After they divorced he died of an overdosis of sleeping pills in 1969.

In 1958 she appeared in Aleksander Ford's "Der achte Wochentag" and in 1969 in "Die Brüicke von Remagen". In 1962 she returned to the stage in "My Fair Lady" and from 1970 she also worked for television. In 1989 she married Charles Regnier, the widower of her friend Pamela Wedelkind. This marriage lasted until his death in 2001 and they often appeared on the stage together. In 1998 she published her memoirs in "Ein Morgen gibt es immer". She died in 2020 in Munich and she was buried in the grave of her parents in Berlin.
