Franz Dominic Grassi was the son of the merchant and financier Franz Josef Grassi. His family had immigrated from Italy to Leipzig. He received a commercial education and often travelled abroad. He founded a company that imported Russian products. After his father died in 1847 he was mostly active in the speculation and exchange business and after his mother died in 1854 he retired from his commercial career. Grassi loved the theatre as well as horses and he was a co-founder of the racing club in Leipzig. He always remained a bachelor and he was well known in Leipzig. He often supported fellow citizens who were in trouble. After his death he left his fortune to the City of Leipzig. The city use his money for many building projects. One of the projects that was financed from his legacy was the building at the Johannisplatz that is now housing the Grassi Museum. His money also contributed to the consturction of the Völkerschlachtdenkmal. |
