Hermann Grauert worked at his father's manufactory before he went to Münster in 1872 to pass exams in Latin, Greek and history to enable him to enter university. He studied history in Göttingen from 1873 to 1876. His promoted under Georg Waitz and continued to enlarge his knowledge at the universities of Berlin, Munich and Strasbourg.

From 1877 onwards he worked at the State Archive in Munich and in 1885 he became a professor at the university in Munich. As a historian he was held in high esteem all over Germany and also known beyond the border. In 1914 he was enobled and in 1915 he became the rector of the university. He died in 1924 in Munich.
