Sarah Woolgar was the son of a tailor who failed as an actor. But he trained her for the stage and she debuted in Plymouth in May 1836. She was more successful than her father and appeared in several cities. She studied music and in 1841 she sang in Birmingham. In November 1843 she was Ophelia in "Hamlet" in Manchester.

She first appeared in London on 9 October at the Adelphy Theatre. In 1844 she played Metcy in Sterling's adaption of "The Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit" by Charles Dickens. In 1855 she married the conductor Alfred Mellon. They had two children. In 1868 she was in Dickens' "No Thoroughfare" at the Adelphi Theatre that was managed by her from 1867 to 1868, after her husband had died in 1867. She continued her stage career until 1883. In 1909 she died in London.
