Karl Kehrer entrered the Hessian army in Darmstadt in 1866 and he too part in the campaign against Prussia. He attented the Vereinigte Artillerie- und Ingenieurschule in Berlin infrom 1869 to 1870. During the Franco-Prussian war he was wounded near Gravelotte. After serving in the Prussian army from 1872 onwards he became a teacher at a militaty school in Jüterbog in 1891. In 1898 he returned to active service he held several commands before he was promoted to lieutenant general in 1904. In 1908 he became a general of artillery. he retired in 1910, but he returned to service once more during the First World War. He received many decorations and he died in Berlin in 1924.
