Richard Ohnsorg studied English and German philology at the University of Marburg. In 1900 he was promoted in Rostock on English drama. Ohnsorg became an actor, a librarian and a theatre director.
In 1902 he founded the theatre company Dramatische Gesellschaft Hamburg that was renamed in Niederdeutsche Bühne in 1920. In 1932 their future star Heidi Kabel joined them. Huge successes enabled the company in 1936 to move to their own building at the Großen Bleichen 23-25. In 1946 this would become the Ohnsorg-Theater.
Dr. Ohnsorg died the next year and was buried at the Ohlsdorf Cemetery in Hamburg.
