Carl Voscherau was the son of a harbour worker from Hamburg. In his youth he took actng lessons, but according to the wish of his father he also trained as a merchant. He worked for the tax authorities in Hamburg, but because he was active as a social democrat he lost his job in 1933.

He started singing for a living and from 1940 onwards he worked at Richard Ohnsorg's Niederdeutsche Bühne. In 1946 he moved to the Thalia Theatre and after the war he played in a lot of movies. On 23 Aug 1968 he was still on the stage, but on the next day he died at home of heart failure.

From 1988 until 1997 his son Henning was mayor of Hamburg.
