August Junkermann joined the Prussian army in Cologne when he was seventeen years old. He took to amateur acting in the army and in 1853 he was engaged as an actor at the theatre in Trier. He appeared on many stages in Germany, Switzerland and Austria afterwards. Between 1871 and 1887 he was employed by the Court Theatre in Stuttgart.

He also appeared abroad for German audiences and lectured in the USA. Junkermann was well known for his interpretations of the works of Fritz Reuter. His first wife Anna was an actress and their son Karl was an actor as well. His second wifre was the actress Rosa Le Seur (1846-1920) and their two sons Hans and Fritz also became actors and worked with him. He died in 1915 in Berlin of a stroke.
