Edmund Koken was educated at the Polytechnical School in Hanover. In 1836 he moved to Munich to continue his studies at the Academy in that city. There he befriended A. Kreling and he was influenced by the landscapes of Rottmann. In 1841 he returned to Hanover.

He worked almost exclusively as a landscape painter. Apart from painting he was also interested in poetry, music and other forms of art. Much of his work can be found at the Niedersächsische Landesgalerie in Hanover.
